INTERVIEW: YIORGOS ELEFTHERIADES talks to FILEP MOTWARY
Dear iDEALS,for many years I have been a loyal client to designer Yiorgos Eleftheriades. He is the perfect example of professionalism because firstly he respects his vision and then his clients. Our friendship began years ago, while I was a fashion student, when he gave me the chance to help him backstage at one of his shows.
FilepMotwary: Yiorgos, would you like to share with me the results from your very first collection, how people received it and how many years of career you count in the business?Yiorgos Eleftheriades: After presenting my first show, I managed to gain respect from the fashion crowd in
Athens, the magazines etc. It was exactly 19 years ago and the clothes were a combination of geometrical yet floating silhouettes having the English Tartan and style as the basic theme. Commercially it was a disaster but creatively, this was the beginning of my obsession with the fact that our world is a mixture of attitudes, various cultures and various ways to conceive it’s
ideals.Filep Motwary: In your opinion, what is the next target a designer must have after a successful and commercial career?YiorgosEleftheriades: Well I guess, after this happens, the work of a designer becomes something more than a personal point of view. It evolves to something that could inspire, be consumed and at the same time have its own “stigma” on the planet of fashion.FilepMotwary: What are the things that interest you?Yiorgos Eleftheriades: The truth around things, nice living, the people in general and the upgrade of them all.FilepMotwary: What makes menswear so exciting these days?YiorgosElefteriades: Menswear has always been exiting for me. Maybe the reason why people see it like this is only because they become more open to things. I don’t see this on the streets though, not only in Athens but anywhere I travel, and I travel quite often. The streets are not exiting anymore concerning on
how people dress.Filep Motwary: What is your advice to a young person who wants to be involved in the business of Fashion?Yiorgos Eleftheriades: I don’t like giving advises especially general ones. I believe that one must have a personal way in dealing with life. Yet, I feel that by having values such as faith, good manners, a low profile combined with hard work can be quite helpful. This is what I need to say. We live in a city (Athens) than anyone can be a star without really having a background of work.
Filep Motwary: Which do you consider as the most important era of fashion between the years 1920 to this day?YiorgosEleftheriades: I think the 1980’s where a breath of fresh air thanks to the Japanese as the “NEWCOMERS” in Europe (Paris). They helped global fashion to change it’s point of view.FilepMotwary: What does fashion need this moment?YiorgosEleftheriades: Fashion in reality is loved by people. The change needed is only in the way we consume it. If we see it as something more personal, more relaxed yet as something frivolous and creative, this will lead fashion to a real evolvement.
FilepMotwary: Give me 5 “clichés” necessary, each time you are in the process for the making your new collection.YiorgosEleftheriades: a) I always have in mind what I presented the previews season; my plusses and minuses.b) How I feel the period I am going through at the time.c) My needs as I am a person pretty demanding in life.d) The joy and beauty I want to share with people.e) The truth and honesty that must be reflected in the clothes.....For more info visit: www.yiorgoseleftheriadis.gr
