DIMITRIS PAPAIOANNOU presents MEDEA

Dear iDEALS, eight years ago I had the chance to see MEDEA of Dimitris Papaioannou, probably the best performance I have ever seen in Athens so far and I have the feeling that I was really lucky back then because it was only presented once in the year 2000. The orginal Medea goes back in 1993... If I close my eyes now I can tell you every detail of it, from the costumes to the make-up..I can even tell you exactly what happened on every scene .. At the time I was a fashion student, working to pay the fees at school and also I was emotionally wrecked because my separation with LEO almost sent me to the hospital. Papaioannou's Medea was in a way a floating piece of wood in the middle of my "personal" ocean that helped me carry on with my dreams. For a while now I have been hearing that MEDEA will go on-stage again and finally the time has arrived, for those of you who missed the first edition, now it is the chance for you to see and undertant what I am talking about. Thanks to the kind admission of Dimitris Papaioannou, the warm help of Thanos Papastergiou and the fantastic photographs by my beloved friend Rene Habermacher, I am giving you a small taste of MEDEA.

MEDEA(2) Fifteen years have passed since the first performance of Medea (1993), Dimitris Papaioannou’s signature work and unquestionably the most inspired achievement of Edafos Dance Theatre, an ensemble that left an indelible mark on the Greek dance-theatre scene of recent times. This inventive, water-bound retelling of the Medea myth was warmly received on its travels round the world, enchanting audiences with its visual power and ingenious coupling of silent, stylised movement with the drama of Bellini’s operas. Glowingly reviewed by the international press, the work has well endured the passage of time. This year, Papaioannou returns to take a fresh look at Medea, bringing the wealth of his experience to bear on this historic and accomplished work. Reworking the production with an all-new cast, he seeks to isolate and convey the essence of what made the original version so captivating. Text by Klimentini Vounelaki, for the programme of the 2008 Athens Festival

NEVER MADE IT IN A MAGAZINE

Dear iDEALS, after having dinner yesterday at my friend/photographer John Mitropoulos, he asked me to follow him at his computer because he wanted to show me a fashion story he did recently and non of the Greek magazines wanted it in it's pages. I decided to post the photographs on my blog as I feel it would be a real waste for people not to see them. I am quite worried about the prejudism that conqueres the fashion magazines here in Athens. Especially the ones that focus on male fashion. I feel it is the right time to reconsider about the value of the present we all live in. The world is moving so fast, anywhere but here. Congratulations John for this great story.

INTERVIEW: CATHERINE BABA talks to FILEP MOTWARY

Dear iDEALS, every time I sit myself down and think what would be really interesting for my readers , I find myself in my office staring on an A4 sized blank page, one hand on my chin and the other painting circles on the paper. When finally the epiphany arrives, I write down a list of names trying to decide who really fits in the direction that I dream for each issue. Most of the times, without any specific reason, I tent to choose those who are hard to be reached. Not because they are snobbish, but only for the fact that they work hard and what they do is, in a way, the future of what we call fashion. This little detail makes my interested in them even more intense. Cathrene Baba's case was proved harder than I thought. The questions, for the world known fashion stylist have been sent to her some months ago. What was left now was for me to receive the answers.. Believe me; it wasn't as easy as it sounds like.
CATHERINA BABA ALI MAHDAVI FILEP MOTWARY(Portrait by Ali Mahdavi)
FilepMotwary:When I used to live in Paris we had coffee once at La Perle. I don't know if you remember. We were introduced by Erotocritos. What carried me away is your way with people. Are you always so charming?
Catherine Baba: Yes, I remember it well. I remember you well! Spring fever, birds in a chorus line of giving life..etc. I must have a divine feeling for you darling!

FilepMotwary: But you are not answering the question..I'm moving to the next one..Looking back at your career, it seems to have been punctuated by a series of unexpected encounters, all leading to the professional you are today. Can you give myself and our readers the people who where more influential to you and why?
CatherineBaba:I don't believe in unexpectencies in general. Everything happens for a reason and all our encounters are pre-destined. A lot of my "unexpected" encounters have all lead to greater exchanges and collaborations. For instance, a major example is with the photographer Ali Mahdavi, with who I have met through Jeremy Scott, whom I met through another lifestyle, quite spontaneous 13 years ago, when we were all "giving birth to ourselves" Today we have a great collaborative vocabulary that is completely inspiring

FilepMotwary: What are the magazines you collaborate with at the moment?
CatherineBaba: Right at this now-now moment DAZED&CONFUSED,VOGUE GIOELLO,STILETTO, VANITY FAIR etc ...

FilepMotwary: I need to confess this: I heard that your answering machine's message was simply the word "DARLING", so I used to call you maybe 4 times a day to hear you say that. Why "darling"?
CatherineBaba: J'adore!!!!!To have you do exactly that darling. I always answered my calls with "darling" to get to the point of the reason hidden in why the phone call was made in the first place. I still do!

FilepMotwary: The way of your personal appeal reflects on how you style the models in your fashion stories. Do you feel that your style is approachable?
Catherine Baba: My style is very personal of course influenced by my many personal banks. My aim is not to necessarily create and work on "approachable" but beauty yes and that is always in the eyes of whoever happens to be looking in at that moment of time.
FilepMotwary: Define "FASHION STYLIST"
CatherineBaba: Evoking a language from a style that exists and taking it further.
FilepMotwary:What is the aim of a fashion story apart from serving the "clients" (campaigns) of a magazine?
CatherineBaba: It is a "vitrine" window of ones expression, a medium of individual expression rather then repetitious cloning! It is important to serve oneself as well as advertisers. For me is is as much to be inspired as well as to inspire! What would be the ideal breakout for you? To continue ...MORE MORE MORE!

FilepMotwary: Could you please advice the young readers who dream to become the next Catherine Baba, an international fashion stylist?
CatherineBaba: Know who you are, be prepared for everything, drink every experience to it's extent and expand! It can be a bumpy ride but, trust me, it's worth it DARLING.
FilepMotwary: You are an Australian based in Paris. How does this work for you?
CatherineBaba: Since I've been officially a "resident" in Paris, it works for me!
