Working with stylist Ellie Uyttenbroek since 1994, Rotterdam-based photographer Ari Versluis has systematically documented numerous identities over the last 14 years. Rotterdam's heterogeneous, multicultural street scene remains a major source of inspiration for Versluis & Uyttenbroek, although since 1998 they have also worked in cities including Bordeaux, Rio de Janeiro, Beiijing, Casablanca, New York and Cabo Verde. They call their series exactitudes: a contraction of ‘exact' and ‘attitude'. By registering their subjects in an identical framework, with similar poses and a strictly observed dress code, Versluis and Uyttenbroek provide an almost scientific, anthropological record of people's attempts to distinguish themselves from others by assuming a group identity. The apparent contradiction between individuality and uniformity is, however, taken to such extremes in their arresting objective-looking photographic viewpoint and stylistic analysis that the artistic aspect clearly dominates the purely documentary element. Exhibitions include -The Utra lounge at Selfridges, a collaboration with the Photographers' Gallery, London (2008), Galerie Cokkie Snoei, Rotterdam (2007), Noovo International Festival for Contemporary Fashion and Photography-Santiago de compostela, Spain (2007), Museum of Contemporary Art MOCA -Taipai - Taiwan: ‘V2' /group (2007), Art Arthina international art fair of Athens - Greece (2007), Galerie Stefanie Seidl - Munchen -Germany: ‘Leute' / group (2007), Galerie Anna Kustera New York -USA : 'I drank the kool-aid" /group (2007), Contact Toronto's photography festival - Toronto - Canada : ‘Imaging a global culture' / group (2007), Centro Cultural Borges - Buenos Aires -Argentina: : solo (2006) and Fotoseptiembre Centro de Imagen - Mexico city - Mexico : Fotoseptiembre 2005 solo.
