INTERVIEW: CHARLES ANASTASE TALKS TO FILEP MOTWARY

dEAR iDEALS, cHARLES Anastase is one of the people I really admire, not only for his fabulous illustrations and clothes collection but also for his attitute towards "cliches". It was hard for me to convince him for this interview but I finally made it. The weird thing is before I opened my email to see his answers, I was at the offices of an Athenian newspaper, having a meeting with the editor in Chief and Charle's name crossed our conversation. It is the proof that he is worth it big time !!!!!!FILEPmOTWARY: We first met three years ago in Amsterdam at Kesselskrammer. At the time we were both chosen from Absolut Vodka Sweden , to represent our countries for their new, at the time, project. You gave up the last minute, right? What happened? CHARLESaNASTASE:I fight against free entertainment. I can not stand anymore big company with lot of money who try to entertain their customers with young talents like us for nothing. Linderberg tried the same on myspace. It makes me sick. We are artists, we need to be protected. FILEPmOTWARY:What I like about you is the fact that your whole family and friends are involved in everything you do. Do you think your success is owed to them? CharlesAnastase: Of course it is, because without all my relatives around I think I would be totally lost. I spoke about the thing that was the most important in my life, and it was family, even if it was awkward it turned into fashion .FilepMOtwary:Recently you were photographed by Karl Lagerfeld for Madame Figaro in a group picture with Stefano Pilati, Sonia Rykiel , generally legends of fashion. How did this actually feel for you. Are you laid back as a person whose name is all over the place at the moment? ....CharlesAnastase: Nicole Picard from Mme Figaro was like a mother to me during the shooting. I remembered she took care of me so much. I was totally drunk from the night before. I was at karaoke in London, and I was having fun with a good friend of mine I haven't seen for ages, but at one point I was so wasted, that I forgot to watch the clock for the train for Paris.  And I realise 40min before that I was missing the fucking train to Karl Lagerfeld . I ran drunk with my clothes smelling alcohol to the first cab, jump in the Eurostar at 5:30 in the morning. Fell asleep like a drunkard and almost wake up Rue de l'Université at Lagerfeld studio. Hopefully there were adorable make up artists, and such electricity in the air because of all the Celebs around that nobody paid attention to me. ;) FilepMotwary:What are your future plans? Is there a goal in your life you want to achieve? CharlesaNASTAse:No/Yes
I am writing an essay to illustrate my next exhibition the next year in Paris (or London , didn't decide yet). Ii takes all my free time. That's an essay about the fame. Its name will be 'The Notorious P.I.G.' We did the first pictures in London for this project on Saturday morning. FilepMotwary:I was told that your first "stage" was at Jean Paul Gaultier at a very young age. Were you always surrounded by people with such great background? How has Charles evolved after so many acquaintances? CharlesAnastase:Ah Ah!!! YES I think I was 12 something. We had to do an internship, I chose him because I saw Rossy De Palma from Almodovar movie in one of his show, and I thought he was the one.
They totally freaked out when they saw me at Gaultier, but Shony and Pascal took care of me at the mythic boutique rue Vivienne. It was a few months after the hysterical time of 'In Bed With MAdonna'. You could smell Madonna everywhere around at this time. And I thank God I saw before it really ended the true color of fashion. At the time it was really really AMAZING. FilepMotwary:Your prêt-a-porter collection among your drawings gave something completely new to the world. Something that was missing: THE FREEDOM to see ourselves and to accept our beauty in all the ways. Please explain the formula CharlesAnastase: It comes straight from the fairy tales. I don't talk about clothes, I talk about what you have deep inside your mind when you are a child, and you start discover the adult world. The clothes are one the main key of this psychological evolution.
FilepMotwary:Where would you like to see yourself in ten years time, doing what? Also, please, share with us your starsign. CharlesAnastase: I am bloody capricorn. Hope I won't be there anymore in 10 years.  FilepMotwary: Is it difficult for you to understand older people and vice versa, I mean work wise. How does the Charles Anastase communication with his collaborators work out? CharlesAnastase: I feel much better with the young ones. They are rebels and violent like me. The old ones try to teach, but they don't know anything. They built us a world that sucks so much. I don't have collaborators, I just have my three best friends Persephone, Lilly and Marie with who I am sharing everything of my life and work. For the rest of the world I am just doing business with it.. My heart can be stone alike sometimes. I like to laugh with my young sisters, and the son of Joana Preiss , Lou, who is a good mate.  FilepMotwary: Do you like Un nouVeau Ideal. CharlesAnastase: Yeap, but a lady never asks  FilepMotwary: LOL, Could you ever draw my portrait?  cHARLESaNASTASE: Oh no, A Lady Should Never Ask. My work around the portrait is something magical coming straight from my mind. I don't decide, something else decide. It sounds like a 'Psychanalyse'.
